As a woman in contemporary society, I have been subject to the constant critique involving the female body. This critique begins the moment the doctor says “it’s a girl!” As a girl grows up in society, we learn the ‘importance’ of being attractive by any means necessary. Media tells women that they are not attractive unless they follow strict meastures. Why did it become so important for women to be eye candy? When did fashion and beauty magazines become the top magazine genre for women?

The Poisoned Apple addresses these issues by reinventing the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. In a nutshell, this story is generally about beauty, vanity, and female jealousy. Beauty prevails through the gain of a husband and royal stature! Snow White’s stepmother is jealous of her and that jealousy fuels the entire story. Also, as in most fairytales, the female villain is independent while the heroine never is. Instead of an independent female villain, I added a modeling agency. The physical poisoned apple that kills Snow White becomes a fashion magazine killing her individuality. The independent character in the story is also the heroine, a free thinker who brings about change. In the end, there are no princes to make a happily ever after. Snow White and Rose Red create their own.
